Having trouble memorizing Chinese characters? Instead of blindly memorizing them, try understanding WHY they look the way they do and how their meanings developed. ■ Understand Why Characters Look the Way They Do Chinese characters are easier to remember when you learn both their form and meaning. For example, 哈 (hā) is made up of 口 (mouth) and 合. 口 represents a meaning related to the mouth, while 合 provides the pronunciation. By learning how each part of a character works, even unfamiliar characters can gradually become easier to recognize. ■ Review Before You Forget ZOUXING uses the FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) algorithm to decide which words to review and when. Review intervals are adjusted based on how well you remember each word, so you don't have to repeat every word the same number of times. ■ Learn Characters Through Radicals Knowing a character's radical can help you guess its meaning. For example, 江 (river) and 海 (sea) both contain 氵, the water radical, so both are related to water. Look for these connections through radicals. Characters that seem complicated at first can become much easier to understand. Instead of simply memorizing Chinese, learn by understanding—and remember for longer.
