Sunrise, sunset, golden hour and blue hour, where you are.
How long until the golden hour? Golden opens and tells you, with the sky you have outside your window drawn on the screen. It is not a table of times: it is the Sun right now. The screen is the colour the sky is, the Sun sits at the height it is really at and in the direction to look for it, and everything moves with it — because every colour in the app is derived from a single number, how high the Sun is above the horizon. WHAT IT TELLS YOU • Dawn, sunrise, the end of the golden hour, solar noon, the evening golden hour, sunset, dusk: today's times, where you are. • What the light is doing right now — night, blue hour, golden hour, daylight — and how long until the next moment. • The Sun's altitude in degrees, updated as you watch. THE GOLDEN AND BLUE HOURS, AS PHOTOGRAPHERS MEAN THEM The golden hour runs from 4 degrees below the horizon to 6 above; the blue hour is the band between 6 and 4 below. Sunrise falls inside the golden hour, which is exactly why the golden hour exists. These are conventions, not astronomy: they are written out in the app and in the code, so you know what you are looking at. IT WORKS WHERE THE DAY DOES NOT END Above the Arctic circle there are days when the Sun does not set and days when it does not rise. The app says so instead of inventing an hour: it reads the phase of the light off the Sun's altitude, which always exists, rather than off a list of events that up there can be empty. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO • No account, no sign-up. • No servers: your position never leaves the phone, and we never see it. • No network: everything is computed on the device, on a plane too. • No precise location: coarse is enough, because a kilometre moves sunrise by two seconds. • No background location: it looks at the Sun only while you are in the app. AND IF YOU WOULD RATHER NOT GIVE A POSITION That is fine: a list of cities is bundled with the app — from Rome to Tromsø — and it works exactly the same way. The list is inside the app, not on a server. PERMISSIONS Coarse location, to know where to compute for. Internet, only for the ads that keep the app free.
