Using publicly available data from the Hong Kong Observatory, check your area's heat index, perceived temperature, best time to go out, and nearby water fountains and cooling centers. Heatstroke prevention tips are applicable to elderly people and parents working outdoors.
"Hot or Not?" is a weather and heat index app designed for Hong Kong residents. Using publicly available meteorological data from the Hong Kong Observatory, it calculates the perceived temperature, heat index, and heat risk level for your area. It then tells you in Cantonese whether it's safe to go out, the best time to go out, and where the nearest water fountains and cooling centers are. Whether you're a construction worker, cleaner, security guard, delivery person, gardener, parent picking up children, caregiver for the elderly, or a resident who enjoys hiking or jogging—"Hot or Not?" helps you avoid the hottest hours of the day, find the nearest hydration points, and reduce the risk of heatstroke and heat exhaustion. No need to look at charts or understand technical terms. The answer is there right away. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ See the answer right away ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ・Large font temperature display, alongside actual air temperature On humid days, the Hong Kong Observatory reports 28 degrees Celsius, but the body feels like it's 35 degrees Celsius. It displays two numbers simultaneously, showing you how much the actual temperature differs from how you feel. ・Five-level heat index: Comfortable → Caution → Hot → Very Hot → Dangerous ・Best time to go out today, easily seen at a glance ・A Cantonese suggestion, such as "Walk slower when it's sunny, and rest in the shade when you see one." ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Same data, different standards ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Hong Kong's workplace heat warning uses the "Hong Kong Heat Index." The US uses the heat index, while Japan uses the wet-bulb/sunlight temperature. All three standards use the same data from the Hong Kong Observatory—but because the weighting of "direct sunlight" in the formulas differs, the conclusions can vary significantly. The app displays Hong Kong's and international standards side-by-side, not to provide definitive conclusions, but simply to show you the complete picture and allow you to decide for yourself what to do today. Want to know why? The app has a dedicated page explaining this, citing all officially published figures. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Where are the nearest drinking fountains and air-conditioned facilities? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ・Over 2,000 Hong Kong government facilities: water dispensers, temporary cooling centers, public toilets ・Click "It's hot right now" to instantly list the three nearest water stations ・Each location includes distance, opening hours, indoor/outdoor location, and whether water is available. ・One-click navigation to open a map and take you there. Data from DATA.GOV.HK public data, covering water dispensers and public toilets from multiple departments including the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, and Water Supplies Department. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Worker Mode ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Construction work, cleaning, security, delivery, gardening — for Hong Kong workers toiling under the sun, this mode is designed for you. • Select work intensity and environment (direct sunlight / shaded / no air conditioning indoors / heat source) • Displays the original text of the current heat warning issued by the Labour Department • Also lists the work-rest ratio according to the international standard ISO 7243 for comparison • Click to record: time, location, current heat level, and duration of continuous work • Records can be exported, but are only stored on your computer and will not be uploaded. This tool will not help you decide when to take a break – this should be determined by the employer's on-site risk assessment and the Labour Department's guidelines. However, if needed in the future, you will have a timestamped record. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Citywide Heat Monitoring ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Hong Kong Observatory's 38 weather stations across Hong Kong, arranged from hottest to coolest. See how much your area differs from other places, and know which roads are cooler and which areas are better for escaping the heat. Each station is labeled with: data time, source station, distance from you, and data confidence level. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Today's Hourly Trend ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Hourly perceived temperature curve, divided into two lines: "Under the Sun" and "With Shelter." The two lines converge before sunrise and after sunset, widening to their widest point at noon—clearly showing the temperature difference between being sunny and not sunny. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Daily Tips ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ・Reminds you what time you should leave home each morning. ・Immediate notification when the Labour Department escalates the heat warning. ・Notify you when your area will become hot within an hour. All notifications are generated on your device and will not be uploaded to your location. The three types of tips can be toggled independently; all are off by default. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ About the Data ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ All meteorological data comes from the Hong Kong Observatory, including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, Hong Kong Heat Index, weather warnings, and hourly weather forecasts. Facility data comes from publicly available information at DATA.GOV.HK. Each value is labeled with: data time, source station, distance, and whether it is a measurement or an estimate. All estimated values are displayed as ranges and will not be presented as precise figures. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Important Notice ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The heat levels displayed in this application are estimated based on publicly available meteorological data and are not government warnings. Official workplace heat warnings are subject to the announcements by the Labour Department. This tool is for general reference only and cannot replace employers' on-site risk assessments, Labour Department guidelines, or medical advice. If you feel unwell, please immediately rest in a shady place and seek assistance. This application is not affiliated with the Hong Kong Observatory, the Labour Department, or any other government department. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Privacy ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ・Location is only for real-time lookup; it is not stored or uploaded. ・Worker mode records are only stored on your device and will be deleted when you delete the application. ・No registration or login required; no account. ・This application displays ads, but only non-personalized ads. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Hot or Not? is a free app developed by an independent developer in Hong Kong. We hope it helps those of you who travel in and out of this city daily. Feel free to leave a message or email us if you have any questions or complaints.
