Hear where a note sits in the key. Degrees, intervals, chords, scales — by ear.
Tonica trains the ear musicians actually use: not "which note is this", but "where does this note sit in the key". A cadence sets the key, a note sounds, and you answer with the scale degree. Every other exercise in the app runs on the same engine.
EXERCISES
• Scale degree — the centre of the app: hear a cadence, then name the degree
• Absolute pitch — one bare note, twelve names
• Intervals — two notes, name the distance
• Chord quality — major, minor, diminished, augmented and the sevenths
• Chord notes — pick every note in a chord: as note names, as intervals above the root, or as degrees in the key
• Scales — modes and minors, pentatonic and symmetric scales, the modes of melodic minor
• Chord progressions — four chords move through a key; name the movement in Roman numerals
WHAT YOU MISS COMES BACK
A spaced-repetition engine keeps a deck for every exercise. Get something right and it climbs a level; miss it and it comes back sooner. Practice goes where your ear is weakest.
HEAR THE DIFFERENCE
Missed one? Compare plays the right answer and the one you picked from the same root, and draws both on a keyboard — a minor third and a major third heard and seen side by side.
A REAL PIANO
Every note is a sampled Steinway: stereo, every semitone of the keyboard. No beeps. Choose the register questions are drawn from on an 88-key picker, set the tempo in BPM, pin the key or let it move every question.
