Will the weather knock out your power? Power Outage Risk turns the National Weather Service forecast for your location into a simple outage risk level, days ahead, so you can get ready: fuel the generator, store water if you have a well pump, plan for medical devices, and move the car out from under the trees.
Covers locations in the USA, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
- Ice outage risk: radial ice from freezing rain over the next 3 days, summed per icing event, with the wind gusts while trees and lines are iced
- Wind outage risk: the peak forecast gust over the next 7 days, against National Weather Service wind criteria
- Thunderstorm winds: the Storm Prediction Center's chance of damaging winds today and tomorrow
- Tropical storm winds: the chance of tropical-storm-force and hurricane-force winds from an active storm
- Overall outage risk: the highest of the boxes, what drives it, when, and roughly how long an outage could last
- National Weather Service alerts that matter for power: Ice Storm, Winter Storm, High Wind, Extreme Wind, Severe Thunderstorm, Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings, including "particularly dangerous situation" ice storms
- A preparation checklist you can tick off
- Search by city, address or ZIP code, or use your current location
Five levels, Minimal to Extreme, built from published thresholds: the ice amounts at which the NWS says damage to branches and power lines begins, the ice and wind loads US power lines are designed for, and NWS Wind Advisory and High Wind Warning criteria. Tap the info button on any box for what it means, where the data comes from, and its limits. Turn each box on or off in Settings.

The outage levels are this app's own estimate from the weather forecast, not a prediction from your utility. They can't see your local trees or lines. For information only; during a storm, follow NWS warnings and check your utility's outage map.
