Check Shinkansen luggage rules, suitcase sizes, and oversized baggage booking.
Planning a trip on Japan's bullet train? Make sure your suitcase meets JR luggage regulations before you reach the platform. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen lines connecting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Fukuoka, luggage with total dimensions between 161 cm and 250 cm requires a seat with an oversized baggage area. Bringing oversized bags without a reservation may result in penalties from train staff. Shinkansen Luggage Checker gives you instant clarity on your baggage rules in three simple steps. What you can do: • Instant dimension calculator: Switch between centimeters and inches to calculate total dimensions (height + width + depth). • Visual rule classification: Instantly know whether your suitcase qualifies as standard carry-on, needs an oversized baggage reservation, or is prohibited. • Suitcase database: Browse pre-measured luggage models from top travel brands. • Step-by-step booking instructions: Clear guides for booking oversized baggage seats using JR Pass QR codes, ticket machines, JR desks, and official booking sites. • Alternatives when trains are full: Tips on hands-free travel with luggage forwarding delivery services and station lockers. Fast, lightweight, and built specifically for travelers exploring Japan.
