Learn Chinese characters by writing them from memory. Offline, with dictionary.
HanziPro helps you actually remember Chinese characters. Look words up in a full Chinese–English dictionary, collect them into your own lists, then learn them three ways: write each character from memory, read the words, and recall them from their meaning. Writing here is about remembering, not calligraphy. Producing a character from memory, stroke by stroke, is one of the most reliable ways to make it stick, and it is far harder than recognising it on a page. No account. No ads. No tracking. Everything stays on your phone. WHAT YOU CAN DO • Look anything up. A full CC-CEDICT dictionary (about 125,000 entries) is built in and works offline. Search by characters, by pinyin ("ni hao" or "nihao") or by English ("population"), or browse A–Z with a fast-scroll rail. • Write characters from memory. You see the word, its pinyin and meaning, with the character you are learning left blank. Write it, then check it against the answer and grade yourself honestly. • Drill a new character until it sticks. Notebook mode lets you write it ten or twenty times in a row, each attempt kept in a strip below the writing square. • See stroke order when you are stuck. Tap to watch the strokes animate over the writing square, or reveal the answer. No penalty, no harsh grading. • Read and recall whole words. Reading shows the hanzi and asks for pinyin and meaning. Recall shows the meaning and asks for the word. Tap or swipe to flip, and swipe to grade. • Review with spaced repetition. An FSRS scheduler brings cards back just before you would forget them, with Again / Hard / Good / Easy grading and a preview of each next interval. New / Later / Due counts on every list and folder show what is waiting. • Practice freely too. Notebook mode for writing and a swipeable flashcard browse for reading and recall let you drill without touching your review schedule. • Organise your way. Group lists into folders (for example HSK → HSK 1, HSK 2) and study a single list, a whole folder or any mix of lists. • Add words quickly. Type a word and the dictionary fills in pinyin and meaning, or import a CSV file from any spreadsheet. • Learn characters in word context. Each character has one writing card, and it is always shown inside a real word from your lists: you practice 人 through 家人 or 人口, not in isolation. • Simplified and Traditional. Choose your script. When the two forms of a word differ, each gets its own card. OFFLINE AND PRIVATE BY DESIGN • No account, no login, no cloud. • No ads, no analytics, no tracking. • Dictionary and stroke data are bundled, so the app never needs a connection. • One-tap backup to a zip file you can keep anywhere, and restore it on a new phone. • Export all your lists as CSV files at any time. ALSO • Light and dark themes. • Works in portrait and landscape, and at large system font sizes. • Stroke-order data for about 9,000 characters. Characters without it can still be practiced and revealed. NOT YET • No automatic handwriting recognition: you compare what you wrote with the answer and grade yourself. Neatness doesn't matter, getting the character right does. • No audio or tone drills yet. • Mandarin only. CREDITS • Dictionary: CC-CEDICT, licensed CC BY-SA 4.0. • Stroke data: hanzi-writer-data, under the Arphic Public License. • Handwriting font: LXGW WenKai, under the SIL Open Font License. Full attribution is in the app under Settings → About. HanziPro is built for the long, quiet kind of learning: write it, check it, come back tomorrow and see if it stuck.
