Translate subtitles and on-screen text live — captions, screen OCR and speech.
Sublate translates the subtitles and text shown by other apps and displays the translation as an overlay, right on top of what you are watching. Three ways to capture, so you are not stuck when one is unavailable. CAPTION MODE (CC) Reads the caption text that the YouTube app or your web browser already shows and translates it instantly. Lightest on battery and the most accurate, because it works with real text. - For a YouTube video in a web browser, subtitles are fetched in advance so lines appear without delay. If the video has human-made subtitles in your language, Sublate can show those instead of a machine translation. - During YouTube ads, translation pauses and continues when your video resumes. Sublate does not block, skip or change ads. - An optional filter leaves out sound labels such as [music] or (laughing), so only the dialogue is translated. SCREEN MODE (OCR) For captions burned into the video, or apps that do not expose their subtitles as text. You choose the area; text recognition runs on your device. SPEECH MODE (STT) No subtitles at all? Sublate recognises the speech in the audio your device plays and builds subtitles from it. Speech recognition currently understands English and Russian and runs on your device. Its model (about 104 MB at the default quality) is downloaded once, after you confirm the size. The recognised text is then translated into your language. MAKE THE OVERLAY YOURS Subtitle size, font, colour and display time, a high-contrast frame, or a dimmed background to hide the original text. WHERE IT WORKS Video apps and websites, short-form video, online courses, live streams, games and everyday apps — anything that is not protected content. Caption Mode works in the YouTube app and web browsers; Screen Mode and Speech Mode work in other apps too. WHERE IT DOES NOT WORK Streaming services that use DRM protection block screen and audio capture at the operating-system level. Android returns a black frame and silent audio to every app there, so no translation tool can read them, including this one. LANGUAGES Translate into 60 languages. On first launch Sublate picks a translation language from your phone's languages, or asks you to choose one; you can change it anytime. The app itself is available in 31 languages. PRIVACY No account and no sign-up. Captured screen images and audio are processed only in memory on your device — never uploaded, never saved to a file. To translate, the extracted text is sent over an encrypted connection to the translation service (Google Translate, or DeepL if you add your own key). One more thing leaves your device: when you watch a YouTube video in a web browser, its video ID — and, if it has human-made subtitles in your language, that language's code — is sent to YouTube to fetch the subtitles in advance. Speech-recognition and translation models are downloaded from public servers. Full details are in the privacy policy. PERMISSIONS AND WHY THEY ARE NEEDED - Accessibility service: in the YouTube app and web browsers, reads the caption text, finds the video player, notices when an ad is playing, and in a browser reads the YouTube video ID from the address bar. It never taps, types or changes anything in other apps. In this version Screen Mode also asks for it. - Display over other apps: draws the translation overlay. - Screen capture: for Screen Mode and Speech Mode. Android asks for your consent every session. - Microphone: optional. Speech Mode normally captures the audio your device plays, without the microphone. For apps that block this, you can turn on Microphone Mode — off by default, and it asks for your confirmation first. Audio is never recorded to a file or transmitted. Sublate is an independent app and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any video service or platform.
