A private foraging companion. Record your walks, log your finds, works offline.
Forager is a journal for people who forage. You walk, you find something, you write it down. The app keeps it on your phone. Breadcrumb trails: Start a recording when you head out and it tracks where you went. There's a stop button on the notification, so you're not digging through the app with cold hands. Drop a waypoint when you find something worth coming back to. Your Journal: Every outing becomes an entry. Add a photo, taken right there or pulled from your gallery. Write down whatever you'll want to know next season, because you won't remember it. Offline maps: Download the map for an area before you leave. Signal has a way of disappearing exactly where the good spots are, and an offline region means the map still works when your bars don't. Online, the map servers see which area you're viewing so they can send the map. Observations: When you do have a connection, Forager can look up what's been observed nearby through iNaturalist, and what the weather has been doing through Open-Meteo. Both receive the coordinates you're searching. That's in the privacy policy, and along with the map, it's the only place your location goes. GPX export: Export any track as a GPX file if you want it somewhere else. It's your data. You shouldn't need permission to take it with you. Backup and Restore: Back up your whole journal, photos included, to a file in a folder you choose, by hand or automatically every day, week or month. Restore it on a new phone, either replacing what's there or merging it in. The backup goes where you put it. Forager doesn't upload it anywhere. What Forager doesn't do: No account, no sign-up, no password to forget. Nothing syncs to a server, because there is no server holding your journal. Delete an entry and it's gone. Uninstall the app and everything goes, photos and all, except your backups. Permissions: Forager asks for location, because a journal about where things grow isn't much use without it. It asks to post notifications so a recording can tell you it's still running. It asks for your camera so you can take a photo right inside an entry. Look at the permission list before you install anything, this app included. Identification: Forager does not identify species. It records what you saw and where you saw it. What it is, that part is yours. Disclaimer: Forager will not tell you what's safe to eat, and nothing in it is advice about eating anything. Whether you eat it is your call alone. If something breaks, or works in a way that annoys you, tell me.
