New: Help in the menu explains folders, playing, opening files and formats. Fixed for large libraries: - Going back from an album returns to where you were in the grid, not to the top. - Turning the phone keeps your place: the album you opened stays open and visible, and turning back returns to the grid. - The "pick a folder" page no longer flashes at start while your library loads.
Local music player for your files: MP3, FLAC, M4A. No ads, no account, no cloud.
Crate is an offline music player for the music you already own. Pick a folder, Crate reads the tags where the files are, and you listen. No account, no cloud, no ads, no subscription, no settings screen. Open it and play. Made for your own music files Crate plays local audio files from your phone, your SD card or any folder a file manager can show: MP3, FLAC, AAC/M4A, M4B audiobooks, WAV, Ogg Vorbis and Opus. Nothing is copied, converted or uploaded. Your music stays where it is. Albums the way your folders are organised Crate groups tracks into albums by folder and tags, so a compilation without an album artist, an album title spelt two ways or a stray tag does not split one album into three. Untagged tracks are named after their folder. Covers come from the files (ID3, iTunes, FLAC pictures) or from a cover.jpg or folder.jpg next to them. Fast, even for large collections Crate reads MP3, M4A and FLAC tags with its own parsers, a few kilobytes per file. A collection of several thousand tracks is scanned in well under a minute, and a rescan only touches files that changed. Plays like a system player should • Gapless playback for live albums and mixes • Lock screen and notification controls with the album cover • Headset and Bluetooth buttons work out of the box • Shuffle, repeat, next and previous • Keeps playing while the screen is off or you use another app • "Open with Crate" from any file manager plays the file Find what you want to hear Search across titles, artists and albums, browse the album grid with covers, or open the full track list. On tablets and in landscape, the album grid and the track list sit side by side. Private by design Crate has no network permission. There is no analytics, no crash reporting, no telemetry, no advertising. The only things it stores are its library index and cover thumbnails, in its own private storage. Uninstalling removes all of it. Free and open source Crate is free software under the GPL-3.0 licence. The source code, the issue tracker and a Mac version of the same player are on GitHub: https://github.com/egdels/crate Crate is a music player for local files only. It does not stream, it has no store and it does not download music.
