Learn Chess now fits every screen, from phones to tablets and laptops. • Tablets, foldables and Chromebooks get a side rail, wider lists, and openings and past games beside their list. • Play with a mouse or a keyboard: arrow keys move, Enter picks a piece up and puts it down. • Dark mode and large text now look right everywhere. • "Bigger buttons" and "Show where I can move" work on every board. • New versions are offered as they come out.
Chess for kids and beginners: lessons, 2,997 puzzles, a coach that explains why.
Learn Chess teaches chess the way a patient teacher would: one idea at a time, with a reason attached to every move. It is built for kids and for complete beginners, so nobody needs to know a single rule before they start. Everything runs on the phone. No account, no sign-in, no advertising, and nothing is collected about you. LESSONS THAT BUILD ON EACH OTHER Thirteen lessons across four chapters, starting at "this is a rook". How each piece moves, how to capture, check and checkmate, and the three special moves that surprise every beginner. Each chess lesson is short, and each one finishes with a position you actually play rather than a page you read. 2,997 PUZZLES THAT ADAPT TO YOU Every puzzle is rated, and so are you. Solve a hard one and the next gets harder; miss a few and it eases off. Your rating is a picture of what you can see on the board, not a score to chase. Practise one tactic at a time when you want to: free pieces, forks, pins, skewers and checkmates. Every puzzle was generated and checked by the app's own chess engine, so each one has exactly one answer and that answer is proved. Not 2,997 puzzles copied from somewhere — 2,997 puzzles the app can show its working for. A COACH THAT EXPLAINS WHY Most chess apps tell a child their move was a blunder. This one tells them why: "Your queen went to f6, where their knight can just take it, and nothing of yours is guarding it." The explanation comes from the engine's own analysis, so it is always about the position actually on the board. On phones that support it, the wording is polished on the device itself by Android's built-in AI. The chess is never left to the model — the engine works out what is true, and the model only helps say it in friendlier words. Where that is unavailable the coach explains in simpler wording instead, and nothing is lost. THE ENDGAMES THAT DECIDE GAMES Five endgame drills for the finishes every chess player needs and most never practise: checkmate with a queen, with a rook, with two rooks, with queen and rook, and walking a pawn home. A fresh position every time, a defending king that runs as well as it can, and a move budget — because these endings are won by method, not by luck. SEVENTEEN OPENINGS, EXPLAINED The Italian, the Sicilian, the London and fourteen more, each explained in one sentence, each with a "show me" walkthrough and a "test me" drill. The app names the opening as you play it, so you learn the theory by recognising it rather than by memorising it. PLAY A REAL OPPONENT A full chess engine with twenty levels of strength, from a gentle beginner up to a level that will beat most adults. Takeback, hints, an evaluation bar, and a blunder guard that asks "are you sure?" before a child gives a piece away. Every game is saved and can be replayed move by move, with the engine's verdict on each of your moves. BUILT TO BE QUIET AND SAFE It is made for kids, so the things that make an app unsafe for children are simply not in it: • No account and no sign-in • No advertising • No in-app purchases • No chat and no social features — nobody can contact your child • Nothing is collected about you, and nothing is sent anywhere • Works completely offline, on a plane or in the car The lessons, the puzzles, the chess engine and the coach are all built into the app, which is why it is under three megabytes and why it needs no connection to teach. Your progress is yours, stored on the device, and Settings has a single button that erases all of it. Whether you are a parent teaching a six-year-old how the knight moves, a beginner who has never finished a game, or a club player drilling tactics on the train, Learn Chess is a chess tutor that fits in a pocket and asks nothing of you.
