You cannot learn radar from a table. Marine Radar gives you an X-band radar with ARPA and AIS on which every knob and key works and the picture responds at once. First you get to know the set, then you practise on the simulator, and finally you take the watch in situations that really happen at sea. LEARNING 10 lessons from scratch: the radar interface, how radar works, gain, sea and rain controls, orientation and relative motion, EBL, VRM and radar fixes, target tracking with ARPA, AIS on the radar, radar and the COLREG, reading the picture, and heavy weather and ice. Each lesson has three parts: you read the theory, carry out tasks on the radar and pass a short check. Lesson 0 walks you through the interface tap by tap — the control to use glows gold. RADAR TASKS 24 tasks with automatic checking: switching on and tuning the radar, rain clutter, H UP and N UP, measuring bearing and range, radar fixes, CPA and TCPA, relative and true vectors, AIS identification, head-on and crossing situations, restricted visibility, recognising echoes and a small target in clutter. A hint is always at hand, and mistakes and score are counted for you. SCENARIOS 10 scenarios with a briefing, a role, objectives and a debrief: anchoring at night, a yacht in fog, a search in a squall, a harbour approach at night, a watch on a container ship, a ferry across a traffic lane, a pilot launch rendezvous, a North Sea gale, search and rescue with a SART, and icebergs at night. You decide who gives way, make the manoeuvre and return to your course. SIMULATOR Set up your own watch: open sea, coast, channel or harbour, the number of ships, sea state and rain, plus a collision course, yachts and fishing boats, buoys, ice or a liferaft with a SART. Or start a random watch with one tap. You steer course and speed and run time ×5 or ×10. RADAR Ranges from 0.5 to 24 NM with range rings, H UP, N UP and C UP, REL and TRUE vectors, echo trails, up to 10 ARPA targets with CPA and TCPA, AIS symbols with name and course, EBL, VRM and a cursor on the echo. The screen shows land, ships, yachts, buoys, rain, sea clutter, ice and SART. TEST AND EXAMS 38 theory questions: a full test, a quick test of 10 random questions and a review of your mistakes. Two practical exams on the simulator — no hints and no highlights, with a 70% pass mark. The final assessment combines the theory test and both exams. WHO IT IS FOR For maritime school students and radar course trainees, for sailors and motorboaters with radar on board, for anyone preparing for higher yacht certificates and for everyone who wants to read a radar picture with confidence. Marine Radar is a training simulator and is not for navigation. On the water, the current regulations, official publications and your vessel's procedures apply.
