Hanafuda Koi-Koi (花札こいこい): Japan's rules, house rules. Offline, fair deals.
Koi-Koi, the classic hanafuda game, as it is played in Japan. Match cards of the same month to take them, build yaku, then stop and score — or call koi-koi and play on for more. Play against the computer, offline too. In English or Japanese: the app follows your phone.
PROVABLY FAIR DEALS
A code before the deal, the key after the round: replaying the key gives the same hands, field and stock order, so the deal was fixed before anyone saw a card. The computer never sees your hand or the stock. Its levels differ only in how it plays — a stronger computer is never dealt better cards.
THE JAPANESE RULES
Checked against 30 Japanese rule-page lineages, 15 apps and Q&A threads: the standard yaku table (five brights 10, four 8, rainy four 7, three 5; boar-deer-butterfly and the ribbons 5; the sake cups 5), doubling at 7 points and when the other player called koi-koi, hand yaku at the deal. Scores are counted for you.
HOUSE RULES, YOUR WAY
The 10- or 15-point table, the sake yaku at 5, 3 or none, rain spoils sake, rainy four, extra points per card, the cup as a plain card, hand yaku, four of a month on the field, both doublings, koi doubling, the dealer's right, who deals next, the month's cards — and matches of 3, 6 or 12 months. The rules in force always show at the top of the table.
FRIENDLY FOR NEW PLAYERS
Month and kind on each card's corner, how close you are to each yaku under your pile, the yaku table a tap away, and the board in view while you decide.
THREE LEVELS, A DAILY MATCH, A RANK TO CLIMB
Easy, normal and strong (it guesses the unseen cards and looks ahead). A daily three-month match with the same cards for everyone, a stamp book, a yaku collection, and a rank from 10-kyu to Meijin and on without end (Eternal Meijin at the fifth Meijin term), with a rating and 68 titles.
Ads: no full-screen ad during a round — now and then one when a month ends (at most one in three months, none in a new player's first six); banners on the start screen and, on tall screens, above the table. Muted when your phone is on silent. Take-backs and a missed day's match are offered with an optional video. Remove all ads with a one-time purchase.
