Penny Value is a coin identifier app and penny value checker for US one-cent coins, made for collectors and anyone who finds an old penny in their change. Use it as a coin value checker: scan a penny with your camera to check its series, year and mint mark, see a value estimate and save it to your collection. The back photo is optional and can help distinguish designs and varieties.
Most pennies are worth one cent. Values shown are conditional estimates for a typical worn coin, if genuine.
Check your wheat penny value
Explore Lincoln Wheat cents, Lincoln Memorial cents, the four 2009 Bicentennial designs and Lincoln Shield cents, plus Indian Head and Flying Eagle pennies. Browse the catalogue by year and mint mark, with reference photographs where available, mintage, composition and weight. The catalogue works offline; photo identification needs an internet connection. Whether you are checking a 1943 steel penny value or a wheat penny from a jar of change, start with the date and mint mark.
Rare pennies, penny errors and varieties
Learn what to check on a 1909-S VDB, a 1955 doubled die or a 1943 steel penny. Guided articles explain mint marks, VDB initials, wear and useful magnet or weight tests. Possible rare pennies need extra checks: a photograph cannot authenticate a coin or prove an error, and a magnet test is a clue, not proof. If the date is unclear, the app can ask for a close-up.
Understand the coin value estimate
Compare catalogue-based estimates rather than assuming every old penny is valuable. Wear, damage and authenticity affect the price. Pro adds a grade estimate from your photo and values across the grade scale; this is not certified grading. Estimates are informational. They are not professional appraisals, offers to buy or guaranteed prices. Have a potentially valuable coin assessed by a qualified professional.
A coin collection app for US pennies
Save coins with photographs, notes, grade and purchase price. Use the coin collection tracker to follow your Lincoln cent sets by date and mint mark and see estimated collection totals. Your collection and set tools are included in the free version. Pro adds CSV export.
Coin scanner: start with the front
Place one penny on a plain surface in good light. Take or import a front photo, optionally add the back, then add a close-up if requested. Review the result and the details to verify before saving your coin.
Free features and optional Pro
The free version includes daily scans with a limit, basic results, the catalogue, collecting tools and guides. It shows ads; rewarded ads can provide extra scans where available. Pro removes ads and adds grade estimates, values at each grade, guided variety checks, CSV export and up to 150 scans a day. Weekly and yearly subscriptions are available. The yearly plan may offer a trial to eligible users. Price, trial duration and renewal terms appear before confirmation. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled in Google Play.
Designed for US pennies
This app does not cover British pennies, Canadian cents, euro cents or every coin worldwide. Dark mode is the default, with an optional light theme. The app is available in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian.
