FIVE ANCIENT GAMES, ONE SHARED LINEAGE
Long before chess reached Northern Europe, the tafl family ruled the board — an asymmetric game of a king and his defenders besieged by a larger army of raiders. Isle Games brings five of these historic and reconstructed rulesets to Android: faithfully researched, honestly labelled where the history is uncertain, and fully playable offline against a sharp on-device AI.
BRANDUBH — Ireland's "Black Raven"
The Irish 7×7 tafl game, attested by excavated boards including the famous 10th-century Ballinderry find and named in Old Irish poetry. A king and four defenders hold the centre against eight raiders in a tight, tactical siege.
ARD RÍ — Scotland's "High King"
A lone king and eight defenders face a heavy force of sixteen attackers on an open 7×7 board with no throne and an easier edge-escape win. Historians treat Ard Rí as a modern reconstruction rather than an attested medieval game — we say so plainly on its Rules screen.
FIDCHELL / GWYDDBWYLL — the game of myth
Celebrated in the Irish sagas and the Welsh Mabinogion as the game of kings, druids, and heroes — but its true rules were never written down. Isle Games follows the leading theory that fidchell used two equal armies of 8, closer to the Roman latrunculi than to king-and-raiders tafl, making it the most strategically distinct game here.
HNEFATAFL — the great Norse king's table
Carried by the Vikings across Scandinavia, Iceland, and the British Isles. This is the modern Fetlar tournament reconstruction on an 11×11 board: a strong king and twelve defenders holding off twenty-four attackers, with shieldwall captures along the edge.
TABLUT — the Sámi original
Recorded in 1732 by botanist Carl Linnaeus during his Lapland expedition — the single most important historical source for the entire tafl family. Nearly every modern hnefatafl reconstruction descends from his account. King and eight defenders vs sixteen attackers, 9×9.
