Train absolute pitch as an adult, with the protocol from a 2025 research study.
Chroma trains absolute pitch (perfect pitch): hearing a single note and naming it with no reference note.
It follows the training protocol from a 2025 University of Surrey study, in which adult musicians trained for about eight weeks. Results varied: two of the twelve participants learned all twelve pitches as fast and accurately as people born with absolute pitch, and the others learned some of them. Chroma shows your progress against the study's own numbers, so you always know where you stand.
HOW IT WORKS
• Hear one piano tone from one of three octaves and name it before the clock runs out
• 288 levels, one pitch at a time, from guided blocks to blind and speed blocks
• Out-of-bound tones and memory wipes stop you from cheating with relative pitch
• Baseline and certification tests scored the way the research scored them
• Progress charts: pitches learned over trials, accuracy per pitch, confusions
BEYOND NAMING: THE LAB
• Stream: tap when your target note sounds in a stream of notes
• Name that key, Song memory and Pitch memory drills
• Sing it: sing a named pitch and see how many cents off you are
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Your training stays on your phone. The microphone is only used in Sing it, and nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.
