Legal Defender: Immigration is a legal defense and preparedness tool for members of the immigrant community and for the neighbors who support and sponsor them. The core function of the app is to provide legal defense services and access to important resources. This includes document preparation, translation with AI guidance, emergency preparedness, family notification, securing legal representation, and live support services for consultations and notarizations. WHAT THE APP PROVIDES Document preparation and secure storage keeps legal forms and personal records organized and available in one place, so nothing has to be found under pressure. Translation with AI guidance helps a user understand what a document says and what it asks of them, in their own language. Emergency preparedness lets a user build a safety plan before it is ever needed, and family notification makes certain that the people who matter know what has happened and where. Legal representation connects a user with an attorney and delivers to that attorney what they need in order to help. Live support provides consultations and notarizations with a real person. Community Ally sponsorship allows supporters to sponsor access for members of their own community. WHY THE APP WAS CREATED Legal Defender was created to facilitate peaceful engagements between the immigrant community and law enforcement agencies. The information in the app is provided for legal preparedness and community safety awareness only. It does not constitute legal advice and it does not create an attorney-client relationship. The app is designed to inform users of their constitutional rights and of how to comply with law enforcement in the event of an unforeseen encounter. We do not condone violence of any kind. The app is not used to incite crime and it is not used to facilitate interference with an officer's duties. We focus on informing our users to understand their rights and to always comply with law enforcement. We educate our users on how to follow the law, not on how to break it. The data, video, and details captured by the app are used to aid attorneys in the legal defense of their clients. That is the purpose of every record the app creates. COMMUNITY ALERTS The Community Alert system is designed to provide community safety information for legal preparedness. The feature prepares users for potential encounters with law enforcement by notifying them to be ready for a situation in which they may need to present identification or documentation to confirm their status. Reports do not specify which agencies are present. They indicate only that there is a law enforcement presence at a location. Reports are vetted through images and descriptions of the encounter, which allows each report to be documented and understood over time through location, frequency, and consistency. Reports are not displayed immediately unless they come from a proven or trusted source, and must be confirmed by other users before they are shown. The app limits the frequency of reports to one every two minutes to prevent spam. COMMUNITY NEWS AND LEGAL REPRESENTATION Recordings are made available to the public on our Community News web app after a fifteen minute delay, which conceals and protects the identity of law enforcement officers from the potential threat of retaliation. Simultaneously, the raw unedited video is forwarded to the user's attorney or legal representation. The location of a detainment is shared with the user's next of kin, family, friends, and attorney, so that the people responsible for them know when and where the detainment took place, and so that the conduct of law enforcement is documented. WHAT WE ARE WORKING TOWARD We look to aid in a return to law and order, and to nonviolent encounters with law enforcement. Preparation lowers the temperature on both sides.
