It takes a lot of placing and waiting to find something, and the near/far indicator isn't as useful as relative signal strength, but within 10 minutes I found a device that had been missing for days. If it's registering highest in a messy area, try rearranging the scene instead of moving the device. I moved a bag, the signal got a lot weaker, and I instantly knew it was in that bag.
