Grow your own colony in an ant farm, as shown in the cross-section. You don't manage the ants individually; you guide them. DRAW A SCENT TRAIL Draw a line on the sand with your finger: the workers follow the scent to the seeds and carry them back to the nest. DESIGN YOUR NEST Draw it in the soil, let the ants dig there. Touch a dug-out chamber and assign it a task: brood chamber, storehouse, or dumping ground. Deep chambers are warm, the young grow faster there. WITHSTAND THE SEASONS Spring rains flood the upper tunnels, move your young deeper. Only a full storehouse survives the long winter. Rival colonies raid; protect the queen. SEND THE PRINCESS AWAY A strong colony raises a princess. Send her on her wedding flight and complete your colony. TWO TYPES The seed-gathering Messor and the nocturnal carpenter ant Camponotus with its large-headed soldiers.
