An English Guide to Nahw: al-Jurjani's classic book on Arabic sentences.
Nahw Meer: An English Guide to Arabic Sentences. The classic first book of Arabic syntax by Mir Sayyid Sharif al-Jurjani (740–816 AH), in clear modern English. Second edition, corrected throughout. Chapters 1 and 2 are free to read. One small payment unlocks the whole book, once. No ads, no subscription, and no internet needed. What is Nahw? Ilm un Nahw is the science that teaches us how to join nouns, verbs, and particles to form complete sentences, and what the vowel on the last letter of each word should be. This science started in the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab RA, when a Bedouin read part of Ayah 3 of Surah At-Tawbah, ﴿أَنَّ اللَّهَ بَرِيءٌ مِّنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُ﴾, with a kasrah at the end, as in رَسُولِهِ, instead of a dammah, as in رَسُولُهُ. This changed the meaning from “that Allah and His Messenger are free from obligations to the polytheists” to “that Allah is free from obligations to the polytheists and to His Messenger.” The Bedouin said that if Allah is free from His Messenger, so is he. After this incident, Umar RA ordered that the rules of Nahw be set down. His masterful book has been studied for centuries, in the schools of the Indian subcontinent and other parts of the world. Its original language is Persian, with several translations in Arabic and Urdu, but very few in modern English. I have faithfully translated the book into contemporary English, with some reorganization and brief additional explanations. Already have the app? The whole book stays free for you.
