You know the shape your hand already falls into for G. ScaleSeek : Mandolin shows you where it goes in every key, and the fifty scales after that.
Pick a root and a scale, and you get it laid out across all four courses, cut into positions that fit a hand. Every dot is labelled with its note name or its interval from the root, the root is marked wherever it falls, and the spelling follows the key you chose, so an E♭ stays an E♭ and never turns into a D♯.
BUILT FOR THE MANDOLIN
• Four courses tuned in fifths, charted one line per course, and the fret markers where a mandolin puts them, including the tenth
• Every position worked out from the pitches of the mandolin's own tuning, never a six-string shape shifted across and hoped for
• Shapes placed where the hand actually plays, not stacked up by the bridge
FIND ANY SCALE
• 51 scales across 8 families: pentatonics, the modes, minor, harmonic and melodic minor, symmetric, 14 world scales and bebop
• All twelve roots, spelled correctly for the key
• Positions numbered by scale degree, so position 1 always starts on the root
• FFcP, the mandolin's own system for covering all twelve keys with four closed hand shapes
SEE IT WHEREVER YOU PLAY
• One position at a time, or the whole neck at once
• Note names or intervals on every dot, whichever you are working in
• A full-neck view that shows how the positions link up
HEAR IT BEFORE YOU PLAY IT
• Tap play to hear any scale run up and back down in one pass, so you hear the shape rather than a list of notes
• Tap a single dot to hear just that note
• The dots light up in time with the sound, so you can see which note you are hearing
SCALES FOR A CHORD
• Name a chord — 27 of them, from a plain major to a 7♯11 — and get the scales that fit over it, the ones that belong listed first
• Every result opens in the finder, in the right key
PRACTICE THAT KEEPS TIME
• Run a scale to a metronome at your own tempo
• Thirteen patterns: up and down, up the neck, the position ladder, over a pedal root, in 3rds, 4ths, 5ths or 6ths, in groups of three, four or six, or in random order
• One to four notes per beat, so the same scale works as quarters or as sixteenths
• A held drone on the root, so you can hear what the scale actually does against its key
• Save the practices you keep coming back to and pick up where you left off
ALTERNATE TUNINGS
• Standard GDAE, plus seven cross-tunings the old-time repertoire actually uses: Gee-Dad, Sawmill, Cross A, Old-Timey D, Dead Man's, Open G and Calico
• Every position is recalculated from the tuning you picked, so what you get is a shape that fits under your hand rather than a standard shape slid sideways
KEEP WHAT YOU LIKE
• Save any position of any scale, in any key, and it is there next time you open the app
• Every scale carries its relative major or minor, the scale it is a mode of, the chords it plays over, and the other names it goes by
