Japanese watch face: a cloisonne plate with six wells that carry goal rings.
WabiFace Shippo brings the gilt wire and coloured glass of Japanese cloisonne to your Wear OS smartwatch. 🔷 SHIPPO-YAKI Shippo-yaki is Japanese cloisonne: fine gilt wire bent into a pattern, laid on a metal plate, and the cells between the wires filled with coloured glass and fired until the surface is one sheet of enamel. The pattern here is shippo-tsunagi, the interlocking circles the craft is named for, holding petals of lapis, green, coral, aubergine and ivory, with gilt kiku rosettes worked into the border. Six bronze-rimmed wells are sunk into the plate, three above and three below. This dial is that plate, kept whole. ✨ THE RUNNING LIGHT A highlight travels the gilt bezel at the edge, one full lap every minute. It tells you the seconds the way a turning piece of enamel tells you where the light is, and it can be switched off for a still dial. ⌚ SIX WELLS Each of the six wells holds a complication, and every one of them is ring-capable: give a well a data source that reports a goal and it draws a progress ring around the value. Battery does this out of the box; assign a step goal or an exercise ring and those fill too. 🕐 THE TIME A wide band of plain enamel crosses the middle of the plate between the two rows of wells, so the hour and minute take all of it — a very large reading with nothing behind it to compete with. 📅 THE CALENDAR The band is a channel through the border rather than a stripe over it, so the calendar is stacked two rows deep in each pocket: the month over the day on the left, the weekday over the seconds on the right. Both can be turned off. 🎨 FOUR ENAMEL GROUNDS Kuro (black), Ruri (lapis), Midori (deep green) and Enji (crimson) — the colours a Meiji workshop fired its grounds in. Only the plain ground changes: every petal, every gilt wire, every bezel and every rosette stays exactly where it was set, which is also what a workshop does when it changes ground. 🪜 THREE INLAYS Kin (gold), Shiro (ivory enamel) and Gin (silver). One choice moves the time, the calendar, the seconds, the complication text and the goal rings together, the way a single craftsman would have cut them all. 🌙 AMBIENT MODE The plate falls away and the six wells stay as thin lit rings inside the circle of the edge, with the hour redrawn above them, so the piece is still recognisable at a glance while the display is dimmed. 🎴 DETAILS - A fired enamel plate kept at full resolution, bubbles and surface wear included - A shippo-tsunagi lattice of gilt wire with gilt kiku rosettes in the border - Six bronze-rimmed wells, each a complication that can carry a goal ring - A thin gilt bezel at the edge that the running light travels 🎴 MORE FROM WABIFACE Kyoto, our free Japanese watch face: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.wabiface.kyoto 🌸 ABOUT WABIFACE WabiFace is a collection of watch faces celebrating Japanese aesthetics — wabi-sabi, mono no aware, and the dignified passage of time.
