8 memory tests and brain games, like the chimp test and a reaction time test
MindMetrics has eight short brain games, and each one ends with a number. Four are memory tests, like the chimp test and Number Memory. The other four are about speed and focus, including a reaction time test that gives you a time in milliseconds. The app charts your recent scores, so you can tell if you're improving. You don't need an account, and all eight games work offline. THE MEMORY TESTS • In the Chimp Test, numbers appear on a 5 by 5 grid and then hide. Tap their squares in order from 1. Level 1 has 3 numbers and each level adds one. They stay up for 3 seconds. Pick 1.2 seconds for double points, or 6 for half. You have three lives. • Number Memory shows a number for one second per digit, then you type it back. Each round adds a digit until you get one wrong. It's a digit span test, a classic way to measure short term memory. • A few squares light up in Visual Memory, then go dark. Tap all of them, in any order. The board grows from 3 by 3 to 8 by 8. Three wrong squares on one level cost a life, and you have three. • Sequence Memory: four colored pads, each with its own note. Repeat the pattern as it grows, one step per round. SPEED AND FOCUS • Reaction Time is a plain reflex test. The screen goes red, then turns green after 2 to 5 seconds, and you tap the moment it changes. Your score is the average of five tries, and a tap that comes too early doesn't count. • Mental Math gives you 60 seconds of arithmetic. Five right answers in a row bring in multiplication, and ten in a row add division and numbers up to 100. Get one wrong and you're back to the easy ones. • Color Match shows a color word in the wrong ink, like RED written in blue, and asks you to tap either the ink or the word. The time limit starts at 5 seconds and shrinks with every right answer, down to 1.5. Three misses end the game. • Odd One Out hides one slightly darker tile, and the difference shrinks every level. One wrong tap ends the run. Get something wrong and the game shows you the right answer. YOUR NUMBERS Scores are saved on your phone. Every game keeps your best, your average over the last 20 games, your play count and a chart of those 20 results. The home screen shows a daily streak (finish one game a day to keep it) and how many of the eight bests you've set. A new best gets a burst of confetti. Leave the app during a game and it waits for you, so a phone call won't cost you a good run. The pause screen hides the board, so you can't use it to study a pattern. PRICE AND ADS MindMetrics is free, and all eight games are open from the start. A banner ad sits at the bottom of the screen. It's hidden in Reaction Time, where a fast tap could hit it by mistake, and while you play Number Memory or Mental Math. There are no full screen ads and no in app purchases. It runs on Android 7.0 and newer. Sound and vibration can be switched off, and there's a dark theme. QUESTIONS How exact is the reaction time test? Timing runs from the first frame drawn green to the moment your finger touches the screen, not when you lift it. Every screen adds a little delay of its own, so results vary a bit between phones. Can I compare scores with friends? Not inside the app. There are no accounts or leaderboards, so a screenshot is the way to do it. Will it nag me about my streak? No. The app doesn't send notifications. Found a bug, or want a ninth game? Email me at filipnordquist@protonmail.com.
