A whole town in one phone book, and one name that fits every clue. Find it.
A whole town is in this phone book, and exactly one name in it fits every clue. Pick up a clue, strike out everyone it rules out, and keep going until a single name is left standing. Then accuse it.
THE TOWN, IN ONE BOOK
Every case is a town's phone book: chapters for its districts, numbered pages, and hundreds or thousands of names in reading order. Somebody borrowed the red bicycle from the bakery door, sent a prize garden gnome on a tour of town, or swapped every doormat on the street overnight. The case arrives as a file on your desk with a short list of clues, and the book holds the culprit.
EACH CLUE, ITS OWN HIGHLIGHTER
Pick a clue and it becomes your highlighter, in its own colour. Their chapter's title is about water. Their page number is odd. Their name has exactly four letters. The name just before theirs starts with M. Strike a whole chapter, a whole page or a single name that the clue rules out, and watch the book thin from thousands of names to a handful.
THE BOOK KEEPS YOU HONEST
Every strike is checked against the clue in your hand. If that clue does not rule out all of it, nothing is struck and it counts as a mistake, so a wrong turn shows up at once, never twenty minutes later. When a name clue strikes a name, the book offers to strike every other copy of it too. The app does the counting and the bookkeeping; the deduction is yours.
ONE NAME, PROVEN
Before a book is dealt, every clue is checked against every entry in it, and the case ships only when exactly one name passes them all. No guessing, no luck, no case without an answer. Close the case and the culprit's entry is torn out of the book and stamped Found.
FOUR RANKS, ENDLESS BOOKS
Rookie opens a 12 page book with five clues. Detective, Inspector and Chief grow it to 90 pages and some 1,700 names, and the clues start reaching the neighbours of a name. Finish ten cases at one rank and the next one opens. Books are generated, not hand counted, so there is always another, and case 12 on your phone is case 12 on every phone, so you can compare notes with a friend.
TOOLS ON THE DESK
Undo takes back your last strike. Find shows every page a name is listed on, with three free searches per case. A hint makes the biggest correct strike the clue in your hand can make. You start with three hints; more come from short ads you choose to watch, or from hint packs in the store. No case ever needs one.
CALM BY DESIGN
No clock on screen, no lives, no failing: a case stays open until you close it. The book holds together when your phone's font size is turned up, and the screen stays awake while you read. Every case is brought by one of the hand drawn cast, from Chef Bruno and Nonna Pia to Whiskers the Cat, and every reveal ends on a smile.
TEN SPECIAL CASE PACKS
A snowy Christmas village, the Hollow Hills, a palace directory, mountain villages, the museum quarter, a fairground and a gold rush town, each with 32 cases from Rookie to Mastermind. Three extreme packs bring 160 page books with some 3,200 names: a Venetian masked ball, the Mastermind Files and Storm Harbour.
Portrait, one hand, sixteen languages.
Rubrica is free, funded by a full screen ad between some cases. Optional extras stay optional: ten themed case packs and hint packs, plus free hints for watching an ad. No subscription, and no account to create.
